  2. thanks Nikhil!

  3. Congratulations, love your work.

  4. I enjoyed the article and am happy to discover your work. One question though – why are so many photographers so quick to point out that they don’t modify by computer? Example – you used a red flash filter to turn a Ocotillo cactus an unnatural red – quite nicely I add – which could just as easily been done with a Hue Saturation layer in PS? So why is one ok, and the other not? I find this philosophical position quite rampant on Nature Photgrahers Forum and others, and it seems to be held mostly by experienced film photographers who had to figure all this stuff out up front. Not a criticism – just curious. Nice work – I will be following you on Twitter.

  5. Hi Glenn, thanks for the comment and the question. I think it is all about what type of artist one wants to be. I like to consider myself a photographer, not a computer artist, so I try to make the major creative decisions before I trigger the shutter, not after. Of course, when processing RAW images, computer work is necessary, so the dividing line is really a very blurry one these days. I’m not suggesting that one is ok and the other not. I’m just trying to stay on the photographer side of things, and not drift too far into the realm of computer artistry. How successful I will be, we shall see!

  7. Congrats, Ian. Excellent article and beautiful images. I enjoyed the read. You probably don’t remember me but I was the “other” photographer on the Machias Seal Island Puffin trip back in June.

  8. Hey Ed, I remember you! Thanks for the kind words, I hope all is well.
